在莎翁四大喜剧之一《第十二夜》中，奥丽维娅（伯爵小姐）的叔父托比·培尔契爵士一直住在侄女家里，他经常邀请安德鲁·艾古契克爵士到家里喝酒作乐。托比·培尔契爵士平时以酒肉为伴，而安德鲁·艾古契克爵士只想利用他追求伯爵小姐，偶尔还喜欢骗他钱。奥丽维娅的管家马伏里奥看不惯他们的行为作风便恐吓了他们，随后俩人联合几名仆人对管家进行报复。他们假借伯爵小姐的名义给管家写告白信，在信中让管家穿上最新流行款式——黄色长筒袜和十字吊带并保持笑容（平时他只穿黑衣且不苟言笑）。管家信以为真并照做了，伯爵小姐看到管家的样子受到了惊吓，其他不知情的人也都以为他疯了，于是管家被关进监狱。

文化背景知识：
十四行诗（sonnet) 是一种诗歌的形式，一共有十四行。诗歌的最后两行必须要有押韵对句（rhyming couplet) 。莎士比亚的《十四行诗》分为两部分，第一部分为前126首，献给一个年轻的贵族（fair lord），诗人的诗热烈地歌颂了这位朋友的美貌以及他们的友情；第二部分为第127首至最后，献给一位“黑女士”（dark lady），描写爱情。

五步抑扬格（iambic pentameter）：抑扬格由两音节构成，一轻一重，重读音节为扬，轻读音节为抑。一个音步是由两个元音标构成的。例如，shall i/compare/thee to/a sum/mer's day（以/划分音步）shall i 是一个音步，shall是一个元音标，i是一个，以此类推，这一句诗划分成了5个音步，即五音步（pentameter）。读这句诗的时候，按照抑扬格的读法，以第一个音步举例，应该轻读shall，重读i，后面也是如此。此即五步抑扬格。
为什么莎士比亚喜欢使用五步抑扬格？
据说五步抑扬格方便演员记忆，观众也更容易理解，因为五步抑扬格与英语十分贴切。此外，心脏跳动的韵律也是抑扬的：咚哒-咚哒-咚哒-咚哒-咚哒。
